Signalling Rate of the SN65LVDT386

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65LVDT386, SN65LVDS386

Hello,

I have a question concerning the SN65LVDT386.

In the data sheet I can read: Maximum recommended signalling rate 250Mbps (=125MHz?). On page 9 of the data sheet I can see plots up to 300MHz. So it seems to me, if the device is also working up to 600Mbps. Also, in an older version of the data sheet (May 2001) I can read: "maximum signalling rate 630Mbps" on the first page.

Why is there now the recommendation of only 250Mbps?

Best Regards,

Christian

  • Greetings,

You are correct, for a data rate of 250Mbps the clock rate would be 125MHz and the plots in the typical characteristics portion of the data sheet are taken up to 600Mbps. If you look on page 13 of the data sheet you can see an example of the eye diagram for the SN65LVDS386 operating at 250Mbps. As you increase your data rate that eye diagram will collapse in more and more (all channels active) but the part will still operate as you stated above. Proper evaluation should be done to ensure that this device will meet the jitter budget of your system.

I have not seen the data sheet from 2001, I know that this data sheet was revised in 2007 but I am unclear at this time on what those changes were.

    Regards,

    Mike
