SN65HVD235 ESD limits

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD235

The SN65HVD235 datasheet states "Bus-Pin ESD Protection Exceeds 16-kV HBM". Does the Human Body Model (HBM) capture both air-gap discharge and contact discharge? That is, does the SN65HVD235 guarantee protection of +-16kV air gap AND contact discharge?

  • contact and air discharge are normally associated with system level tests and the IEC61000-4-2 ESD standard.  HBM is Human Body Model and it is an IC level ESD test defined by JEDEC.  The discharge model, energy and severity are completely different and HBM doesn't imply any sort of system level components on the PCB such as connectors, capacitors, CM chokes, etc.  You will need to design for you system level requirements.  The HVD235 at 16kV HBM performance is one of the best inherent CAN transceivers on the market for IC level ESD, however for IEC system level external TVS solutions should be used or at least the option to populate them if needed should be put on your PCB.  Best EMC/ESD design guidelines should be used with ground plane and TVS solutions on the bus pins as close to the connector as possible with a direct return to ground to keep these extremely high voltage and current levels of IEC ESD from as much of the PCB as possible.  Solutions include SM712, MMBZ15 or MMBZ18 which should clamp low enough at the TVS solution to work with the SN65HVD235.
