Hi Team,

My customer considers to use MAX3238-Q1 for his automotive application.
He conducted reliability test for MAX3238-Q1 but I heard he couldn't pass the 1kV impulse testing.
The RS-232 port(DOUT1-5, RIN1-3) was shorted to GND pin(the devices permanently damaged) when the voltage applied.
The test condition is the following.

・applied voltage[Vp]=1kV
・applied number：100
・duration time：1us
・time interval：35Hz
・winding wire：2

Is there any solution for the issue?

MAX3238-Q1 is only specified for 15kV HBM on the interface pins. THis is a very high voltage, but short duration pulse. No more than 10ns.

A 1us pulse is a surge test, which this device is not specified for.

Is there any surge protection IC for this purpose?
I believe TI doesn't have, but would like to confirm just in case.
