TLK106: Problem with link detection in forced mode 100Mbit Full Duplex

Part Number: TLK106

We are using the TLK106 on two different hardware and are now having a problem with the link detection of the PHY when forcing 100Mb/FD. When the PHY is switched to this mode most times no link is detected and sometimes the link is detected after a very long time (> 20 seconds). This problem occures with different link partners connected so we assume it is not a problem of the PHY used at the link partner. The link partner is set to auto negotiation. To switch to forced mode we use the BMCR register and set the bits 8 and 13 and clear bit 12. Is there something alse we need to do to use forced mode with TLK106 PHY?

  • Hi Julian,

Are you using the robust auto mdi-x mode? When you disable auto-negotiation and force link speed and duplex, people sometimes leave auto mdi-x active. This mode(link forced & auto mdi-x) is not supported by IEEE.

TLK106 has a robust auto mdi-x mode to still resolve MDI connection when auto-negotiation is disabled. Enable robust auto mdi-x using register 0x9 bit[5] and try your link.

    Best Regards,
