SN65LBC184: compatibility with SN75176A

Part Number: SN65LBC184
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN75176A

Hi,

I think the title says it all.

We are using the SN65LBC184 in our products to manage the DMX 512 protocol.

When sending informations from a light console that is using the SN75176A our product does not understand it.

I would like to know if the SN65LBC184 and the  SN75176A are fully compatible or not.

Thank you very much,

Nicolas

  • Hello Nicolas,

The SN75176A supports RS-485 Applications (DMX 512 protocol is based on the EIA-485 standard) up to 5MBps. The output driver of the SN75176A has the electrical specifications to be compliant with RS-485. So it should be fully compatible with the SN65LBC184 as far as data transfer.

Since you are encountering communication problems, I would suggest checking the waveforms on the two bus pins with an oscilloscope to make sure that enough differential voltage is appearing on the bus for the SN65LBC184 to read it properly. If the bus is not being driven to the proper voltage levels it could suggest a problem with the termination on the bus.

Also if data rates higher than 5MBps are being used the SN75176A driver may be struggling to drive the bus fast enough. The SN65LBC184 device has integrated transient voltage suppressor which will add slightly more capacitance onto the bus further slowing down data transfer.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. If you could provide a snapshot of the bus waveforms I can help you further debug the communication issues you are encountering.
