TPS2540: SDP device connection with CDP mode

Part Number: TPS2540
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2546

Hi Donovan,

Does TPS2540 with CDP mode behave as SDP mode of 0.5A limit after TPS2540 recognized connected SDP device?

What is defferent from TPS2546 for this behavior?

  • Hi Hirotaka,

No.  The TPS2540 stays in CDP mode and will source the current that the device wants.  So if an SDP is connected, the SDP will only draw a max of 500 mA for a USB2.0 device even if the current limit is set to over 1.5A.  There is no difference in the TPS2546.  I was mentioning that some devices such as Apple devices do not detect CDPs.  The TPS2546 has a feature that allows the TPS2546 to operate as a CDP and still allow communications via USB2.0 to such devices.  Section 9.1.2 on page 29 of the TPS2546 datasheet explains this is more detail.

    Thanks,

    Donovan
