DS90C031: LVDS driver driving capability

Part Number: DS90C031
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS90C032, DS91M040, SN65LVDS105

I want to use DS90C031 as LVDS driver and i will be connecting one output channel of driver to 4 receivers
(Each using DS90C032), at a maximum distance of 2 meters with a maximum speed of 10Mbps.
So it will be like one LVDS op channel driving 4 LVDS input channels.
Is this configuration will work??
Will one LVDS output channel is able to drive 4 LVDS input channels??

  • What happens if i replace the receiver with part no DS91M040??
  • Hello,

We will look into this and get back to you.

  • Hello,

In principle, an LVDS transmitter (like one output of DS90C031) can support multi-drop (driving multiple receivers), especially with few receivers and low data rate as in your case. Notice that you can have only one termination resistor which should be placed on the last receiver. Normally, the multi-drop configuration is a bus configuration with one transmitter on one end and several receivers on the bus with a termination on the LVDS input of the last receiver.

If your configuration has 4 different LVDS lines, going out of the transmitter to different receivers (basically a star topology), then this may not work (due to long unterminated stubs) and in this case you need to use a repeater such as SN65LVDS105.

It doesn't matter if the LVDS receiver is DS90C032 or DS91M040.

Please refer to the following app note for more details and analysis on multi-drop LVDS configurations: www.ti.com/.../slla054a.
