DS90LV049: ESD Protection

Part Number: DS90LV049
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS90LV019, TPD2E2U06, TPD1E05U06

Does this part have enough ESD protection built in, or should a designer add more ESD protection to lines of interest?

A cable will be plugged in externally, so the possibility of ESD contact is not zero.

TIA.

  • Hello,

DS90LV049 has more than 7kV of internal ESD protection (HBM). This should be adequate for many application. However, if in your application you anticipate the device to be subjected to higher ESD discharge, I would recommend adding additional ESD protection.

  • Thank you Yaser, that does indeed make sense.
We were also looking at the DS90LV019 part that is a single channel driver/receiver but its ESD rating is only 2kV, so maybe additional protection for it also.
Would be appropriate to put an ESD protection device on the line if it will now be in parallel with the internal protections?
I was thinking of Littelfuse PESD0603-240 which has zener built in.
    Thanks!
  • Hi William,

Yes; if the device will be connected to cable/connector and there is chance for ESD discharge, then it is recommended to add external ESD protection. The fact that the external ESD protection is in parallel with internal protection is not a problem.
TI actually offers ESD protection devices that are appropriate for this application such as TPD1E05U06 (single channel) and TPD2E2U06 (dual channel).
