TPS2051C: Output Discharge Resistor Power Dissipation

Part Number: TPS2051C
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2051, , TPS2051B

Hello

I want to use TPS2051 in an USB OTG application.

When configured as Device the USB Power is supplied from the USB Connector and the TPS2051C is disabled.

When the device is disabled the Output Discharge Resistor gets active, which will result in a contious current through the power switch. (5V 470R 50mW Power Dissipation).

For me its Ok to have this power dissipation, but could the device handle this continous current through the discharge resistor?

I can not choose a "-2 device"like TPS20xxC-2 because I want to limit the USB current to 1A.

Thanks for quick answer.

  • Hi, Marc Figliuolo ,

Sorry for late reply because of vacation.

The discharge resistor of our device is designed to discharge 5V VBUS, but not designed for this continuous discharge case, so we can't guarantee the part will be always working well at long term discharging.

From my side, I have below suggestions:
    1. Instead of disable EN pin, shutdown Vin. When part UVLO, the discharge resistor will be high resistance. But shutting down Vin should not be as easy as disable EN. Please ignore if you can't shutdown Vin.
    2. To use TPS2051B. This part current limit is 1A and do not have discharge function.

Please feel free to discuss. If you still have concern, we can try to find if there're other solutions.

  • Hello Bob

Thank you for your suggestions. Nr. 2 is not an option because of the reverse current protection.

Nr.1 I've already nearly realized I only have to add an additional AND Gate. So thank you.

    Regards,

    Marc
