TCAN1042H: Termination resistor size

Guru 19495 points
Part Number: TCAN1042H
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN1042DEVM, TIDA-01487

TCAN1042DEVM schematic is described termination resistor size:0603 on 120Ω.

Is this size also recommended for 60Ω condition?

TIDA-01487 is using 125mW resistor on 120Ω, is 60Ω resistor also no problem for 125mW size?

Best regards,

Satoshi

  • Hi Satoshi-san,

Are you putting two 60-Ohm resistors in series (R6 and R7 such as the layout below) or replacing the 120-Ohm with a single 60-Ohm?

At a total load of 60-Ohm, CANH and CANL will attempt to drive a 3v differential. This would require around 25mA total through the load or 75mW. In this case, you're still within the margin with a 125mW 60-Ohm resistor.

Keep in mind that the CANH and CANL drivers have a limited amount of supply current, normally around 100mA. If you're system must be robust, you use this to determine the maximum power rating needed.

Let me know if this answers your question.

    Eric
