TCA6408A-Q1: PWM Capability of I2C GPIO Expander

Part Number: TCA6408A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCA6408A

Is the TCA6408A-Q1 capable of producing a low frequency PWM signal with good accuracy on the duty cycle?  The frequency would be less than 400Hz and the duty cycle accuracy is assumed to be +/-5%.  Latency is not a concern.  Thanks.

  • Hey Mark,

TCA6408A is does not generate PWM outputs unless you program the device to be an output high in one I2C transaction and then change it to be an output low in another I2C transaction and repeat this multiple times. This would tie up the I2C bus and I am unsure how much accuracy you would get out of this.

Does your PWM GPIO need to be auto qualified?

    Thanks,
    -Bobby
  • Yes, the application is automotive and devices must be automotive qualified.

  • Hey Mark,

You could use TCA6408A-Q1 but it will require you to constantly communicate with the device to turn the GPOs on and off and tie up the I2C bus so in my opinion this would not be a suitable device.

We do not have an automotive qualified device which has PWM at the moment.
