SN65HVD10: Short circuit to ground protection

Part Number: SN65HVD10

Hello,

Is there a finite period of time that the output can sustain a short circuit to ground?   If so what is the criteria?  The data sheet shows there is short circuit protection but does not specify if it is indefinite.  Due to a board manufacturing error it took sometime to discover the short circuit and now I need to determine if the part sustained damage or should continue to operate as normal.

Thank you,

HSG

  • Hello,

The driver output current during a short circuit condition will be limited in order to prevent damage to the IC, so the device should be capable of withstanding shorts for indefinite periods of time. Note, though, that a short-circuit condition typically results in increased power dissipation in the device, which will cause it to heat up. The HVD10's thermal shutdown feature will prevent this from causing any immediate damage, but in general semiconductor lifetimes are degraded if operated long-term under elevated temperatures.

    Regards,
    Max
