TVS0500: vs PTVS5V0S1UR

Dear Cameron,

you suggested to use TVS0500 for USB VBUS ESD protection. We are looking at the comparison between TVS0500 and traditional TVS, and i'm not sure that the TVS0500 is better than PTVS5V0S1UR.

The clamping voltage of both devices is 9.2V.

If we look at the 10/1000 the TVS0500 can absorb 180W while the PTVS5V0S1UR can absorb 400W

If we look at the 8/20 (61000-4-5) the TVS0500 can absorb 400W while the PTVS5V0S1UR , i'm not sure how to calculate, do you know how to calculate from 10/1000 to 8/20? ( if i follow the fig3 on page 6 of PTVS5V0S1UR for duration of 20us it can absorb 2000W)

so can you tell which device is better regarding to 61000-4-5?

please can you confirm that the TVS0500 complies to 61000-4-4?

please can you confirm that the TVS0500 complies to 61000-4-2 Level 4?

Hello,

There is no easy way to directly calculate the 8/20us current from the 10/1000us pulse. However it is safe to say it will be higher.

The other device can do more surge current than the TVS0500.

The datasheet of the TVS0500 shows the compliant level for each of those standards.

Hello Cameron,

would you recommend TVS0500 for USB VBUS ?

Pros of TVS0500 -> IEC 61000-4-4 EFT, Surge Current (8/20 µs) vs Temperature, smaller footprint x2

Cons -> lower ippm x2, lower Pppm x2

There is no 8/20 in PTVS5V0S1UR for comparing, there is no I/V curve in PTVS5V0S1UR for comparing.

2)Would you say that the TPD1S514 device is better than TVS0500, and why?

3) For 12V rails do you recommend to use TVS1400 or TVS1401? (other part is PTVS12VS1UR)

I would recommend TVS0500 for USB VBUS, and although it does less power most PE standards are not super high.

The TPD1S514 is an OVP switch that will shut off the voltage. TVS0500 will clamp the votlage on the rail to an acceptable level.

The difference between TVS1400 and TVS1401 is that one is bidirecitonal and one is unidirectional. For USB systems that are unidirectional in nature I would recommend the unidirectional device.

Hello,

The TVSxxxx devices are not suitable to use for FPD link as the slew rate of the signal would turn on the device and sink current causing a distortion of the signal
