What is the function of the SPLIT pin on a CAN transceiver?

The SPLIT pin’s function is to drive a stronger recessive voltage level to the CAN bus, keeping it stable (much less deviation) and thus lowering the potential for common-mode emitted noise. Older CAN transceivers have this pin to help with emissions in applications due to the CAN symmetry of the bus not being optimal with older design processes.
Newer CAN transceivers, like the TCAN family from TI don't need the SPLIT pin. Devices like the TCAN1042 and TCAN1043 are able to pass emissions certifications for the automotive market without the SPLIT pin assistance. This is due to these devices being designed in a modern process to create a better symmetry on the CANH and CANL signals. This leaves very little deviation in the differential signals, which cause the common-mode noise to be inherently low.
