You will need to calculate the maximum junction temperature. The equation is Tjmax= TAmax + (Pd x RθJA).
Where RθJA is the Junction-to-ambient thermal resistance, TA is the operating free-air temperature, and Pd is the power dissipation. These are all available in the datasheet.

Thanks for the response. I was hoping you would say that this component was rated to a higher value than what I was calculating.
Does this component have a package option that is rated above 96°C?

This does not answer the original question, exactly.
Normally, TI publishes (in most cases) the Maximum Tj, in addition to the Theta's. Your formula is correct for calculating the approximate junction temperature at 85°C for normal convection cooling, assuming standard ANSI setup. The Power Dissipation listed is rated for a 50ohm load. Performing these calculations does not allow for any derating/margin analysis for circuit reliability design (life analysis).
1. Can I use the typical maximum Tj of 125°C or 150°C? Some TI RS485 devices have even higher Tj maximums (170°C).
or
2. Is 96.22°C the actual maximum Tj for this device...somehow, I doubt this.

You are correct that the equation is just an approximation. Unfortunately the maximum Tj is not specified for this device. Therefore, we cannot guarantee the device will not be damaged if the maximum Tj goes above the approximated value.
