TPS65987D: Tradeoffs between HD3SS460 and TUSB1064

Part Number: TPS65987D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HD3SS460, TUSB1064,

Hello,

I found this thread about using the HD3SS460 vs TUSB1064 with TPS65987D: https://e2e.ti.com/support/interface/f/138/t/805919?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=tps65987

Can you describe the tradeoffs that come with using one of these devices over the other? My customer prefers to use HD3SS460 but isn't sure about their choice.

Thanks,

Michael

HD3SS460 is a generic MUX that can be used in both the source and the sink side application.

TUSB1064 is a MUX plus re-driver function. But with the re-driver function, TUSB1064 is limited to the sink side while TUSB1046 is limited to the source side for the DP application.

The choice between HD3SS460 and TUSB1064 comes down to the re-driver function which is a system design consideration. Please refer to this white paper in particular Figure 8 (Gen 1 5G) and 9 (Gen 2 10G) : https://www.usb.org/sites/default/files/USB_3.1_Loss_Budget_Rev_1.0_-_2015-03-02.pdf. For Gen 2 10G, the loss budget on the sink side is 8.5dB. If the design (Board trace + connector + Type C mux + via, etc) will exceed this budget, then they would need to consider TUSB1064.

    Thanks
