TL16C550C: maximum input clock

Part Number: TL16C550C
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TL16C550D

Hi,

I need to replace the PC16550DVX/NOPB component because it is EOL. The TL16C550CIFNR is suggested as replacement. My application use the component at 5V and with a 22.1184MHz quartz. The datasheet reports that the ACE contains a programmable baud generator that takes a clock input in the range between DC and 16MHz (24MHz for the PC16550D) .

Is this limit valid for 5V and 3.3V operation? I found in other non TI alternatives that such limit may depend on the supply voltage: is this the case also for the TI component?

Thanks.

  • Hey User,

As you have observed, the clock oscillator is maximum value that can be supported is dependent on the Vcc value you use. For the TL16C550C we support 16MHz for 5V and 14.9MHz for 3.3V. It looks like your crystal is too fast for our device (outside our recommended operating spec) though it may work, we would not suggest using 22MHz on our device.

Do you need to use a pin to pin solution? If not, you may want to try the D revision of the device: TL16C550D.

I wasn't able to find a pin to pin solution which supports your frequency range. (FN package seems to be harder to find).

  • Thank you for your reply confirming my concerns: the component seems to work in our application but, as you said, is out of specifications
