TVS3301: What level is TVS3301 categolized to in the surge immunity test standard, IEC61000-4-5?

Part Number: TVS3301

 Hello guys,

One of my customers is considering using TVS3301 to protect for 30V line of their new products.

They have a question as the follow. Could you please give me your answer?

Q. What level is TVS3301 categolized to in  the surge immunity test standard, IEC61000-4-5? Is it level 4?

Your reply would be much appreciated.

 Kazuya.

  • Hi Kazuya,

    Welcome to E2E!

The TVS3301 is rated class 2 for it offers protection to up to 27A against the 1-kV, 42-Ω IEC61000-4-5 surge test.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Andy,

Thank you very much for the prompt reply.

Could I ask you a few additional questions as the below?

     Q1. Has TVS3301 been tested for class 3 (2kV) or class 4 (4kV) of IEC61000-4-5 surge test?

Q2. If the device was tested with class 3 or 4 condition, was the result "failed"?

Q3. Do you have any idea or way to increase surge immunity level of product which uses TVS3301 to class 3 or 4?

Is there any possiblity to increase the surge immunity level by any external part using?

Q4. If 2 or 3 pcs of TVS3301 in parallel, can surge immunity in the case be incresed?

Thank you again and best regards,

     Kazuya.

  •  Hi Andy,

Could you please give me your reply?

Your reply would be much appreciated.

     Thank you and best regards,

  •  Hi Andy,

     I got the following information.

     >The customers targets are 6kV at common mode test and 2kV at normal mode of IEC61000-4-5 standard.

Your comment or advice would be appreciated.

     Thank you and best regards,

     Kazuya.

  • Hi Kazuya,

I apologize for the late response.

    For the first questions asked:

    Q1. Has TVS3301been tested for class 3 (2kV) or class 4 (4kV) of IEC61000-4-5 surge test?

During testing devices were tested until failure meaning that level 2 surge protection is the maximum capabilities of the TVS3301.

Q2. If the device was tested with class 3 or 4 condition, was the result "failed"?

    Yes.

Q3. Do you have any idea or way to increase surge immunity level of product which uses TVS3301 to class 3 or 4? Is there any possiblity to increase the surge immunity level by any external part using?

When attempting to use multiple devices to protect against ESD events one of the devices will be bound to receive most of the impact. This may result in damaging one of the devices and not achieving higher surge protection.

Q4. If 2 or 3 pcs of TVS3301 in parallel, can surge immunity in the case be increased?

Like in question 3 if you place 2 or 3 TVS diodes in parallel one of the devices is bound to receive most of the impact so this will not be able to double or triple the surge protection. The surge protection might be able to be increased, but we do not have data for this application and it is not guaranteed to work in an application. Having that the TVS family is already pretty high cost, adding more TVS diodes will further increase the cost of the solution.

Having that the TVS3301 is our highest surge rated device, and only bidirectional device that can handle up to 33V. Unfortunately we do not have anything in our portfolio that can offer reliable protection against the 2kV test, and the 6kV test is even more out of reach.

    Best regards,
