TCAN1042HG-Q1: Chip failure after normal operation

Part Number: TCAN1042HG-Q1

Hello,

we equipped a processor based device with a CAN interface with galvanic isolatd power supply and an additional ESD protection.

After normal operation the device has been returned by cause of a CAN interface failure.

It could be stated despite of communication at TxD/RxD that especially CANH is set hard to low.

ESD protection is still ok. Is any reason known for that specific behaviour?

Thanks for your support.

Regards

Torsten

  • Torsten,

A low impedance from CANH or CANL to ground tends to be the most common failure mode of this device when exposed to an electrical overstress such as an ESD event.  The device does have fairly strong internal protection for this, though, and I would generally expect this TVS to be effective in protecting it even further.  Do you have any idea what sort of stresses may have been seen seen at this port in your application?  (E.g., short circuits to power supply voltages, large transient stresses due to static discharges or large coupled noise pulses, etc.?)

    Regards,
    Max
