SN65LBC174A-EP: Pass PWM at fixed freq

Part Number: SN65LBC174A-EP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65LBC175A-EP, SN65LBC173A-EP

Hello,

I had a question regarding the SN65LBC174A-EP. We are looking to pass a PWM signal at a fixed freq but variable duty cycle. Can the part pass the duty of the pulses or does it send a bit stream?

Additionally, we need a receiver that has the same 5V supply and ideally the same temp range of operation. Can you help direct me to some options?

Thanks,

Adam

  • Adam,

The IC simply translates a logic-high voltage on its input to a positive differential voltage on its output and a logic-low voltage on its input to a negative differential voltage on its output.  What that logic input is representing at an application level is not so much a concern - it could be serial data, PWM signaling, whatever.  So, I don't see an issue with this usage.  I would say that for PWM applications you may want to double-check that the differential output rise/fall times are fast enough to reliably transition the output state even for the minimum and maximum duty cycle expected and that the pulse skew is acceptable (since this will introduce some duty cycle error).

For the receiver, would either SN65LBC173A-EP or SN65LBC175A-EP work for you?  (They are similar devices with slightly different pinouts in order to accommodate different enable control schemes.)

    Regards,
