DP83867IS: Application Inquiry

Hello Team,

My customer wanted to confirm if the DP83867IS will work on his set-up. She is planning to interface this device to a processor that only supports a 1Gbps SGMII interface; is it possible for the PHY (medium side) to operate at 10/100Mbps even if it use only 2 diff pairs instead of 4? Also want to confirm that even if the medium side is operating at 100Mbps, will the interface to the MAC still be ok to run at 1Gbps? Are there any special settings that need to be made in the registers to operate in this way?

    Hi Renan,

    Can you clarify what you mean when your processor only supports 1Gbps SGMII? The SGMII interface operates at a constant frequency, it will not down-grade like RGMII at different Copper speeds. The DP83867 supports using the SGMII interface at 100Mbps when there is a 100Mbps Copper link. 

    The DP83867 can operate at 10/100Mbps speeds using only 2 differential pairs. Channels C and D can be left disconnected as an example.
