Ben,

By definition, 3.3V CAN transceivers aren't fully compliant to ISO11898-2 because of the Vsym parameter and the single-ended CANH and CANL voltage definitions. They are compatible with 5V CAN transceivers that adhere to the ISO11898-2 specification. This is the same for ISO16845, the 3.3V CAN transceivers are compatible, but not fully compliant.

Hi Eric,

I would like to double confirm with you.

Does 5V CAN means 5V supply voltage? or Voltage at any bus terminal(VIC)?

An other question is,

We have show *Compatible With ISO 11898-2 Standard* in SN65HVD23x datasheet, but it's fully compliance in 5V CAN.

Did you have suitable solution can share with us? ( 3.3V CAN Transceivers/ Fully Compatible With ISO 11898-2 Standard)

Ben,

5V CAN does indeed mean 5V supply (VCC) voltage and thus 5V CAN bus biasing. 3.3V CAN means the VCC is 3.3V and thus the CAN bus is biased to 3.3V.

Because of some parameters in the 5V CAN ISO 11898 standard, and because the 3.3V CANH and CANL voltages are asymmetrical to work with 5V CAN transceivers, it's not possible for the 3.3V CAN to be fully compliant with the ISO11898-2 standard. So there aren't any 3.3V transceivers that are fully compliant with ISO11898-2, but they will work with 5V transceivers that are fully compliant with ISO11898-2.
