SN65HVD230: PTC on CAN L & CAN H

Part Number: SN65HVD230

Hi,

We are using part SN65HVD230D in our design. and before the transceiver we are using 200mA hold current PTC for protection on Pin 6 & 7(CAN L & CAN H). Selected PTC is MF-PSHT020KX-2.

Please confirm whether the PTC protect the IC or not.

Thanks & Regards,

Arun

  • Also confirm the Sink and Source current of Pin 6 & 7.

  • Hi Arunkumar,

It is recommend that the CANH and CANL pins source or sink a high-level output current of -40mA or low-level output current of 48mA respectively during normal operation. During fault cases, these pins will supply up to their short-circuit output current listed in the Driver Characteristics section. The device will internally limit any further current through the device to prevent damage.

The PTCs in the schematic would provide an extra layer of protection and would activate at a lower fault current than SN65HVD230's internal protection. This extra protection would likely help the device in the case where the fault voltage is outside the specified maximum bus terminal voltage by removing the stress once excess current draw is detected (the PTC blocks the source of the transient energy while the TVS provides the transient energy with an alternate path).

Because the threshold of 200mA is above the normal working current for the device, it should not interfere during normal operating conditions.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Regards,
    Eric Schott
