SN65HVD230: Common bus with CAN 2.0B and CAN-FD

Part Number: SN65HVD230
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN1146-Q1, TCAN1145-Q1

HI team,

Could you give me comment on following customer question?

Q1. If the customer wants to add CAN-FD devices into CAN 2.0B with SN65HVD230 bus network system, does the customer need to add CAN-FD support device by replacing all SN65HVD230? Or CAN-FD device can be connected and worked with keeping previous CAN 2.0B with SN65HVD230 bus network?

Best regards,

Takeshi Sasaki

  • Sasaki-san,

Because the structures of the CAN frames between CAN FD and CAN 2.0b are different, anytime a CAN FD message is sent to CAN2.0b nodes, an error will be asserted to the bus. The same is true for the opposite direction, CAN2.0b message to a CAN FD node. Classic CAN and CAN FD messages cannot be sent at the same time unless you have a transceiver that will filter out the messages.

Partial networking transceivers (TCAN1145-Q1, TCAN1146-Q1) do have a feature in which the node can ignore CAN FD messages, and thus allow for CAN FD and classic CAN to exist on one network. Though all the nodes on the network would need to be partial networking nodes, so I'm not sure how feasible that is for the customer, I just wanted to make you aware.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Regards,
