SN65HVD232: Unpowered device on bus

Part Number: SN65HVD232

I have a customer who uses the SN65HVD232DR in an application where one of the modules that uses this transceiver can be offline, that is, unpowered.  What affect does an unpowered transceiver have on the bus?  Does the SN65HVD232DR change the impedance of the CAN bus if it is connected to the bus but not powered?

Thanks!

  • Hi Will,

When the device is unpowered, SN65HVD232's CAN bus pins will remain in a high impedance state so that they do not disturb the bus. The presented bus load will be slightly different than when the transceiver is powered and in a recessive state because the recessive-level biasing circuit will not be provided Vcc. See Figure 27 on the datasheet for the input circuit schematic.

Let me know if you have any more quetions.

    Regards,
    Eric Schott
