TCAN334: ESD Ratings for Air Discharge for IEC61000-4-2

Hello !

I have selected the TCAN334 for my CAN bus application, and I am currently designing ESD protections for my circuit. I selected the TCAN334 for its integrated ESD protection, exceeding IEC61000-4-2 Contact Discharge requirement at 8kV ; unfortunately, there is no mention of the Air Discharge rating for this component.

Is this rating available anywhere ?

    Hi Corentin,

    I can't find air-gap discharge ratings for TCAN334 in our internal documents. It's possible the device was not tested for this. Generally devices survive higher voltage ratings for air-gap tests than discharge tests because the impedance of the air reduces the strike current - in case you are targeting the same rating (8kV) for air-gap. 

    Are you targeting a certain test level for the air-gap rating? Let me know if there's another way I can help.

    Hi Eric,

    Thanks a lot for the quick response.

    I am indeed targeting the IEC 61000-4-2 standard, which specifies (at level 4) a 15kV-rating for air-gap discharge. I agree that a 12kV-rating for contact discharge should give me some headroom regarding air-gap discharge, I had hoped you guys would have had data to back up my assumption.

    Unless it is possible for you to conduct those tests to update the documentation, I guess "we'll see" :-)
