SN65HVD233-HT: Can we use SN65HVD233-HT IC to interface with 5V CAN bus

Part Number: SN65HVD233-HT

Greetings,

i want to use SN65HVD233-HT IC to interface STM microcontroller to CAN bus having different voltage levels.

CAN we use this IC to interface with different Voltage levels.

Thanks in advance

  • Kishor,

Which voltage levels are different? We have CAN transceivers where the IO voltage can be adjusted separately from the supply voltage bias. Is this what you're referring to?

    Regards,

  • Hi Eric Hackett ,

Thank you for the reply,  just realised Interoperability Of 3.3-VCAN in 5-V CAN Systems part explained in datasheet  answers my previous question,

However It would be great if you could explain what this means which is mentioned further in the datasheet:

"Electrical interoperability does not assure interchangeability however. Most implementer of CAN buses recognize that ISO 11898 does not sufficiently specify the electrical layer and that strict standard compliance alone does not ensure interchangeability. This comes only with thorough equipment testing."

  • Kishor,

This is referring to the fact that while 3.3V and 5V CAN transceivers can work with each other on the same CAN bus, we cannot guarantee that a 3.3V transceiver can be switched out with a 5V transceiver on that bus and work no matter what. Changing out 5V and 3.3V CAN transceivers is something that has to be tested at the customer side, as it will likely require system design adjustments.
