DS90UB941AS-Q1: FDPLink-III ESD protection options

Part Number: DS90UB941AS-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD1E05U06-Q1, TPD1E0B04, TPD1E01B04

Hello Community,

I have three options to protect FPDlink bus against ESD

PART                                  CL              Vwrv         Vbreak        Vclamp     Type

  1. TPD1E05U06-Q1          0.5pF           5.5V          8.7V             14V           Diode
  2. TPD1E0B04                  0.18pF         3.6V          6.7V             10.1V        Diode
  3. CGA0603MLC-05E       0.2pF           5.0V            -                  30V          ChipGuard

with regard to CL, I expect to have a low value with any option so no impact on signal integrity from these devices, nevertheless I am not sure with the clamp voltages.

These are the only values I can get from the datasheet.

Any recommendation for any specific component mentioned above or just go for the one with best price?

  • Hi Francisco,

In order not to impact the signal integrity performance of the FPD-Link signal, I would recommend to use the external ESD diode with low capacitance loading. I believe the rule of thumb is 0.5pF for 6Gbps. However, this is system dependent and the capacitance budget of a system to meet the eye diagram may require much lower ESD capacitance.

Regarding the voltage clamp specs, it depends on if you have the wake-up circuitry attached to the FPD-Link signal, and how you implement wake-up circuit. If you don't have any external wake-up circuit, you can use any devices listed in your thread.

The two external ESD diodes that I used are TPD1E0B04 : 0.18pF(max) and TPD1E01B04 : 0.23pF(max); however, only TPD1E01B04DPYR will have auto-grade. It should be available soon 2Q21.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
