TCAN1145-Q1: VSUP pin connection

Part Number: TCAN1145-Q1

Hi team,

What is the purpose of VSUP Pin in TCAN1145-Q1 ?

I am not using any battery means can I connect VSUP pin to VCC? Or can make VSUP Pin float?

Warm regards,

Monisha OM

  • Hi Monisha,

VCC is just used to power the CAN transceiver. The VSUP pin is used to provide power to the internal regulators of the device. You can not leave VSUP floating, but if you want you can supply it with 5V. Keep in mind the minimum voltage requirement on VSUP is 4.5V and this voltage is what biases your CANH and CANL lines. It is what sets your recessive voltage.

In order to avoid issues in the future all CAN transceivers on the bus should be supplied with the same VSUP voltage.

    Best,

    Chris

  • Hi Monisha,

I actually misspoke in my last post. VSUP does not set the voltage of the CANH and CANL lines, VCC does. However VSUP is still important for powering the device. It allows the device to operate a low power receiver while VCC is not receiving power. This means that the device can still receive a wake up request while VCC is not active. Also if VSUP is below UVSUP threshold the device will enter protected mode and it will not transmit or receive data.

However, what I said before is still correct. You can supply both VSUP and VCC with 5V.

    Best,

    Chris
