I have my EVM dip switches set such that pin 1, EN# is ON, and pin 7 PORT_H is ON (DFP). I have the micro-B going back to the US port of a USB hub dev kit. Now obviously, the hub US port isn't going to provide the power and this is DFP mode so I don't expect it to just work. And indeed when I plug a phone in when in this mode, I see weird behavior (ID light and power going on and off), probably phone trying to charge and get nothing. That seems normal, time to plug the barrel jack in. I connect it to a benchtop supply and provide around 5.5-6V and see the phone now draw a standard 500mA. But there is no data, it won't get the connection back to the hub and receive the DS ports.

If I turn EN# OFF, I do then get data (devices on hub DS ports)- but no power of course.

If I run in DRP mode (set PORT_H OFF), with NO external power, then I get data (devices on DS ports on my hub). But as soon as I add external power, data is gone same as DFP mode.

D8 is populated and D9 is NOT populated.

Am I doing something wrong or missing some detail? Do I have a defective board?

Hi,

Let me fill in some gaps here. When configured as a DFP the data role for the USB-C port should be a USB Host however you have a the US port of a USB Hub connected. This will be in conflict with the smartphone which most likely operates a DRP. The DRP port sees DFP CC termination and configures it self as a USB Device. Two USB devices connected together leads to no USB data. When TUSB320 is disabled you then get dead battery mode where UFP CC termination is presented. The DRP port configures as a USB Host and data can flow (USB Host connected to US port of USB Hub) but you get no power consumption from the EVM since phone is trying to provide power over VBUS.

If your intent is to charge a smart phone and act as a USB device, you will need to implement USB-C PD controller to perform a USB power role swap. Since data and power will be "flowing" in opposite directions. The FAQ below can help differentiate between a PD controller and CC controller (TUSB320) and when to select between the two.

I also recommend using TUSB320LAI if you want to stick with a simple CC controller.
