TCA9548A: TCA9548A series Connection

Part Number: TCA9548A

Hello TI Team,

I was wondering if there is any concern in connecting two TCA9548A as such:

Slave to Slave straight connect (SD0/SCL0....SD7/SC0)

Masters on opposite side of TCA9548A. One will behave as slave after muxing I2C.

This application is for board testing purposes.

Many thanks

  • Hi Edgar,

You can connect two TCA9548As in series with each other (or parallel) as long as you have a unique I2C address. Any host one the secondary side won't be able to directly enable/disable a channel though unless the channel the I2C host is on is enabled. (The main I2C SDA/SCL lines are what the 9548A looks at to be programmed).

There are some tricky tidbits when connecting I2C switches in series. The IoL for example will sum up when multiple channels are enabled since the pull up resistors act as if they are in parallel when channels are enabled. The RDSon of the channels pass FETs also increase the VoLs seen by the I2C bus as well. This can make things tricky when you're operating at lower logic levels.
