TCAN1042HV-Q1: Pin drop replacement for TCAN1051HV-Q1 ?

Part Number: TCAN1042HV-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN1051HV-Q1, , TCAN1051

At present i am using TCAN1051HV-Q1 in my design as CAN interface. We have a plan to develop alternate for ease of procurement.

i checked all the parameters with TCAN1042HV-Q1 IC and found to have no difference..

Pls suggest on this..

and also i would like to know as part of interest, why was the similar  parts introduced by TI with same spec.

  • Hi RREDDY,

Yes, these devices have the same specifications and share all functionality except for that of pin 8. TCAN1042 has a standby feature allowing for a very low power mode. In this mode, the device monitors the bus with a low power receiver and indicates to the controller when it detects activity on the bus. In contrast, TCAN1051 has a silent feature that is a slightly higher power mode than TCAN1042's standby, but still allows for reception of CAN communication from the bus while the transmitter remains disabled. These different features allow the devices to serve specific needs of systems which look to conserve power or which would prefer to monitor bus communications during a slightly higher-low power state.

If pin 8 is not used in your design or if changes can be made (likely only in software) to accommodate for this feature change, there is no issue swapping these devices in for one another.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
