SN75DP159: Difference Between Redriver and Re-timer

Part Number: SN75DP159
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDS181

Hi TI team,

I wanted to know the basic difference between the redriver and retimer IC,
What is the benefits of using Re-Timer over Redriver?

Also i am planning to use TMDS181 for HDMI Input  and SN75DP159 HDMI output retimer.
Can I use the above ICs for 4K resolution support.

Waiting for your valuable reply.

Thank you.

With Regards,
Ananthesh

  • Redrivers perform signal conditioning through an equalizer function and compensate for Inter-symbol interference(ISI), but cannot compensate for random jitter or non-ISI Deterministic jitter. Retimers have a clock and data recovery function that helps compensate for all jitter components including both random and deterministic. The advantages of a retimer over a redriver are that the redriver does not compensate for random jitter while the retimer does.

Yes, both of those devices can support 4K resolutions.
