Is the SN74AVCA164245 self-buffered?

Hi everyone,

I am planning to connect this 16-bit noninverting bus transceiver (SN74AVCA164245) to a processor's External Bus Interface (EBI), which will translate 1.8V (bus voltage) to 3.3V (device voltage, ie Ethernet IC).

Question: Is this bus transceiver IC self-buffered? In other words, do I need to put a buffer IC, such as the SN74AUC16245, in between the EBI and the SN74AVCA164245?

If there is any other suggestion, please let me know! Thank you in advance

Hi Hai,

The SN74AVCA164245 is not a buffer, it is simply a switch. What goes in on one side comes out on the other. The SN74AVCB324245 will translate from 1.8V to 3.3V and from 3.3V to 1.8V as well as other notable voltage nodes. It provides active current drive and is available in a variety of bit widths. It may have more bits than you need though so if this is over kill let me know and I will suggest more parts from that family for you. Please refer to this E2E post on the same subject:

Hi Hai,

I stand corrected, the SN74AVCA164245 is self buffered and will give you the proper voltage translation that you are looking for in your design. The SN74AUC16245 is simply a switch to provide greater drive strength. I still recommended that you see all of the attached material above and let me know if you have any more questions.
