TSB81BA3E PHY Controller Reference design for S400 IEEE1394 repeater

I beleive the best example of this device in use would be through this PCI Firewire card.

You would test it by installing it in a PC with a free PCI slot and connecting a slave firewire device.

For an IEEE 1394b repeater, do I need an OHCI link layer chip or just the PHY layer chip? 

From looking at the datasheet for the dev kit on the bottom of page 2 it states that “The received data is also transmitted (repeated) on the other connected and active cable ports” (it says the same thing in TSB81BA3E datasheet).  Does this mean only the PHY layer TSB81BA3E and not the TSB82AA2 OHCI link layer chip required since the PHY chip does the repeating and the OHCI does the PCI link.

I doubt that a reference design for a plain repeater with S400 restriction exists.

A repeater doesn't need an LLC. Connect the PHY's pins as if there were a powered-down LLC.
(See especially the description of the LPS pin on pages 10 and 4.)

To restrict the ports to S400, see the DS0/DS1/DS2 pins.
