UART PROTECTION

I want to protect my uart RX,TX lines.

I found TPD2EUSB30A. which is for differential lines.

Basically, it’s just a TVS diodes, so it shouldn’t care if the lines are single-ended or differential. Am I right ?

  • Yes, that is correct. The main concern is that the signal range on each protection pin falls within 0 to 5.5 V.

    Regards,
  • Thanks.

So why its better to take this device and not two TVS diodes?

    Any other recomemdation?

  • I can think of a couple of reasons:

    1.  Placement cost.
      1. It costs less to place one device than two devices during PCB assembly.

    2. capacitance matching between the 2 IO pins of the TVS
      1. two separate devices can have process variations resulting an appreciable difference from device to device,
      2. but one device suffering the same process variation will have the same change in capacitance for both IO pins, resulting in a much better matched capacitance.
        1. This is only advantageous with differential signals.
