TIDA-00630: TUSB321AI + HD3SS3212

Hi Team,

I found the following USB Type-C Dock Reference Design.
http://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-00630?keyMatch=TIDA-00630&tisearch=Search-EN

My customer considers to use TUSB8041 and one of four port to be Type-C connector for his system.
He wants to charge(5V/3A) the system from Type-C port, so DRP is required.

Is it possible to achieve it using TUSB321AI (CC controller) + HD3SS3212 (SS MUX) as substitute for HD3SS2522 in this case?

Best Regards,
Yaita / Japan disty

  • Hello Yaita-san,

It is possible to replace the HD3SS2522 using the TUSB321AI + HD3SS3212. Actually, it is a better solution since the TUSB321A is a newer device.

    Regards,

    Diego.

  • Hi Diego-san,

Thank you always for your support.
Is there reference design that uses TUSB8041 and one of four port to be Type-C connector that is DRP(Dual Role Port)?

  • Hello Yaita-san,

You can use the Type-C Mini Dock as a reference, please see the Port 2 part in the schematic. The design switches the upstream port and one downstream port depending on the status of the TUSB322 ID pin (when ID is LOW connects the type-C port to a Downstream port, otherwise connects the Upstream port). The ID pin is also used to turn ON/OFF the VBUS switch.

    Diego.

  • Hi Diego-san,

Thank you for giving me the information of Type-C Mini Dock reference design.

Regarding Port 2, I believe I have to just connect PORT pin to NC(leave unconnected) to support DRP.
    Is my understanding correct?

    Best Regards,
    Yaita

  • Hi Yaita-san,

That´s correct, you only need to leave PORT as NC for DRP operation. A second option you may consider for the switch is the TUSB542, which is a switch and a re-driver for Type-C at Gen1 data rate (5Gbps) if the layout design is meant to be large.

    Best regards,

    Diego.
