TIOS101: Ground Isolation

Part Number: TIOS101

The TIOS101 has pins 9, 8, and 7 which are for the sensor connections from the MOSFETs: VCC (24v), OUT, and GND.  The GND connection is shown as connected to the system ground in the application diagram (outside the chip), but does it need to be?  Ground for the chip is through the thermal pad.  Is there a connection between chip ground and GND pin 7, or are these isolated?

  • Hi David,

Pin 7 is indeed connected to the chip ground internally - it is not isolated. The connection through the thermal pad is actually not a very strong electrical connection (the pad is primarily present to aid in thermal coupling) and so the ground pin is needed.

  • Thanks for the reply - I'll do isolation outside the chip. One other question: Can the LDO outputs (pin 1) from two devices be paralleled?
  • David,

I'd try to avoid this. While it may be OK most of the time, there wouldn't be a way to ensure an equitable split of load current between the two regulators. This means that in some cases one of the LDOs may have to source the majority of the current (for example, if its output voltage were on the higher end of our specified tolerance) and end up overheating due to the excess power dissipation.
