DS90UB960-Q1: Interface with DS90UB960

Part Number: DS90UB960-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMH0395, , DS90UB933-Q1, DS90UB935-Q1, DS90UB953-Q1, DS90UB913A-Q1

Hello I have a customer with the question below:-

Can the LMH0395 which has an LVDS output, directly interface with the DS90UB960 which has FPD-Link-III inputs?

  • Hello-

No devices such as repeaters, redrivers, or signal conditioners are allowed in the signal path of FPD-Link III SerDes. The DS90UB960-Q1 already has a built-in adaptive equalizers for compensating for the transmission channel losses.

  • Hello,

The cable equalizers and such features of the input of the DS90UB960 are not of particular relevance for our needs.

The reason for considering interfacing the LMH0395 to the DS90UB960 is as follows:-

The  LMH0395 accepts HD-SDI video source as input and provides an LVDS output.

The DS90UB960 accepts LVDS input and provides MIPI output.

We have some HD-SDI video sources which can be fed into multiple  LMH0395 to convert to LVDS.

We wish to feed that LVDS outputs of the  LMH0395 devices into the inputs of DS90UB960 so that

ultimately, we get a MIPI output.

Basically, we wish to realise a HDSDI-to-MIPI converter.

Why would this not be possible?

    Regards,

    Lee Foss.

  • Hello-

The DS90UB960-Q1 is a deserializer device and it can only interface to compatible FPD-Link III serializers (DS90UB953-Q1, DS90UB935-Q1, DS90UB933-Q1, and DS90UB913A-Q1).

Note that FPD-Link III interface is not LVDS interface. It does have equivalent signal levels for the forward channel, however, there is a back-channel signal (it is transmitted from a deserializer to a serializer) that is transmitted simultaneously with high-speed forward channel signal over the same transmission medium. The two signal channels are separated in frequency. A buffer, repeater, or an equalizer in the FPD-Link III signal path would break the back-channel communication between a serializer and a deserilizer. The back-channel communication is essential for FPD-Link III operation.
