HD3SS460: MUX Functional Mode

Part Number: HD3SS460

Hi

My customer is looking for a MUX to switch between Display Port (4x lanes) and 1x USB3.0.  LnA LnB LnC LnD are the video source.
The data sheet specified this device provides muxing between 2CH Data /  2CH Video but what customer needs are muxing between 2CH Data / 4CH Video. Does this mean this device is not suitable?

When look at configurations below it seems fulfill customer requirements. Do the POL, AMSEL and EN can be manually controlled?

    Unfortunately, HD3SS460 only supports 2CH Data / 2CH Video , it does not support 2CH Data / 4CH Video.

    Thanks

  • Hi David

Understand it supports 2CH Data/2CH video. However, customer do not need to run Data and Video at the same time. What it needs are MUX between 4 lane DP and 2CH Data (USB 3.0). Please refer to below for illustration. Do you think this device could support?

Does it automatically detect the sink device whether it is a USB device or DP device? or it has to be done via via jumper?

    HD3SS460 will fit this purpose.
For 4 lane DP mode, you will have LN[A,B,C,D] goes to CTX[n]/RX[n]
For USB normal mode, you will have SSTX/SSRX connect to CTX1/CRX1
For USB Flip mode, you will have SSTX/SSRX connect to CTX2/CRX2

TUSB546 will also work, it is similar to HD3SS460, but with redriver capability added to compensate for channel insertion loss. The target is USB3.1 Gen 1 5G.

    TUSB1046 is targeted USB3.1 Gen 2 10G.

You can use jumper (GPIO mode) or register access (I2C mode) to switch between data and video mode. But typically this is handled by the PD controller through CC communication. Depending on the CC communication, PD controller will then put the HD3SS460/TUSB546/TUSB1046 into the proper state.

    Thanks

  • Hi David

    Thanks for the confirmation.

Is there a way to automatically detect the sink device if it is a USB device or DP device connected, or this only can be done via jumper?

You will then need a PD controller such as TPS6598x. The TPS6598x will communicate through the CC1/CC2, and depending on the communication, then TPS6598x will configure HD3SS460 either using GPIO or I2C mode into USB/DP mode.

For more info on USB Type C and Alt mode, please refer to this white paper: www.ti.com/.../slly021.pdf.

    Thanks
