TPS25810A-Q1: Type-C basic question

Part Number: TPS25810A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25810

Hi USB controller team,

I’d like to confirm the basic operation of USB type-C with our device because our customer (AISIN AW) and I are beginner for type-C. So, please answer my basic question to USB type-C. They will use TPS25810AQ1 at DFP side for automotive infotainment system.

  1. What happen to connect type-C which doesn’t support BC1.2 to type-A? Both of type-A and type-C will intend to supply each other, so is there possibility happen break to these connector?

  1. Does TPS25810Q1 output VBUS voltage before CC line negotiation established? If the VBUS line outputs voltage, what current capability to output from VBUS?

  1. If the power spec of DFP connector with TPS25810AQ1 is different to UFP side power, how will be the setting to TPS25810AQ1?  How to align the DFP side power spec and UFP side? Customer thinks TPS25810AQ1 is connected various UFP side, so I’d like to know how TPS25810AQ1 to establish the power method.

Nishimura

  • Hi, Nishimura-San,

Question1: Only when Rd(5.1K) is applied to CC1 or CC2, do the TPS25810A turn on power switch and establish Vbus. For most of application, Rd is at device side(UFP), so when you connect type A connector to type C connector, there's only 5V on Type A connector, it will not break down the connector.

Question2: As I just said, VBUS will not establish before CC line negotiation. There are lots of waveform in TPS25810 datasheet for your reference. If VBUS established, advertisement current can be set as 1.5A or 3A through CHG and CHG_H pin. Please refer to datasheet for detailed information.

Question3: Why different? DFP and UFP use CC1 and CC2 to negotiation VBUS, Vconn, advertisement current, and other mode.  This is defined in USB Type-C spec, all DFP and UFP should compliant to this spec.

Seems you are new to type c. So I suggest you to look through TPS25810 datasheet and Type C spec. These will help you understand type C faster.

    Regards,

    Bob
