TPD2EUSB30A: Compared to TPD2E001

I have an old design with a USB charger and we used the TPD2EUSB30A but when looking at the reference design for the TPS2549 I see that it uses the TPD2E001. Spec wise the TPD2EUSB30A seems better yet the TPD2E001 has a connection to Vusb.

Would you help me understand the pros and cons of using these parts please.

The difference is that exactly what you pointed out about the spec and VBus. The main thing I would say is that TPD2E001 will allow the data pins to be shorted to VBus without damaging the ESD device while the A version of TPD2EUSB30 only has a working voltage of 3.6V. However TPD2EUSB30A has a lower clamping voltage. Please refer to the support training on TI.com/esd to learn more about ESD and how to select an ESD component.

Looking through that training documentation about the only thing I retained was that lower clamping voltage is generally better so I guess I'll stick with the TPD2EUSB30A

The TPS2549 has this in the datasheet:

Additionally, the TPS2549-Q1 device integrates shortto-VBUS
protection for D+ and D– to prevent damage
when D+ and/or D– unexpectedly short to VBUS.

So that supports my choice of using the TPD2EUSB30 unless I've misunderstood something.

There is a difference with the TPD2EUSB30 and TPD2EUSB30A. The A version only has 3.6V working voltage and would not work for short to vbus application. However the TPD2EUSB30 has 5.5V working voltage so it can withstand short to vbus.

Hi Cameron,

OK, thanks for catching that. I have to admit I do have a love/hate relationship with TI's portfolio, there are SO many choices with many parts just having a subtle difference.

Hi Cameron,

I quick follow up question. We started our board layout and found that the D+/D- would route better if we could swap pins on the TPD2EUSB30. The datasheet has pin 1 as D+ and pin 2 as D- but I'm pretty sure internally the pins are the same and we can swap if we want.

Could you please confirm that is correct or not.
