TPD8S300: What if VBUS is only 5V?

Part Number: TPD8S300
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD2S300, TPD6S300,

Team,

What device should I consider to ESD protect a Type C connector if VBUS will stay 5V? (not using alt modes)

Thanks,

Brian

  • Hi Brian,
What lines are you looking to include ESD protection on?
If you are not using any alternate modes, and do not require ESD/surge protection on your SBU lines, you can consider using TPD2S300. TPD2S300 will only provide ESD and surge protection on CC1/CC2 lines. TPD8S300 will provide surge protection on CC1/2,SBU1/2 and 8 channels of ESD protection. TPD6S300 will provide surge protection on CC1/2,SBU1/2 and 6 channels of ESD protection. You can include some combination of our integrated ESD/surge protection along with discrete ESD diodes, depending on your implementation.
  • Well, they havent specified any requirement yet, but I suspect they haven't thought that far ahead.

What I do know is that their VBUS wont ever be 20V, so it seems like overkill to spend 50 cents on a protection device meant for something that wont ever happen.

Is there a different device family besides TPDxS300 that provides standard protection on all type C lines that typically need ESD protection, but don't have the short to VBUS?

    Thanks,

    Brian

  • Hi Brian,
There are still non-compliant Type-C cables on the market today that can carry 20V prior to PD contract negotiation, which is why TPDxS300 family is still recommended even for 5V applications. e2e.ti.com/.../usb-type-c-will-your-esd-solution-protect-the-port is a good link as to some factors that require TPDxS300 family. But yes, if the customer is concerned about cost, they can check out discrete ESD implementations based on their application. We do not have integrated ESD on all possible Type-C pins, and the customer will have to choose ESD based off of the pins they require protection on. Example: Super-speed lines will require ultra-low capacitance compared to CC/SBU lines.
You can also check out our ESD portfolio by end-equipment here: www.ti.com/.../esd-by-interface.html for recommendations on ESD protection.
