TVS0500: why choose TVS0500 over standard SMC TVS diode

Dear *,

i have some questions regarding TVS protection

1) When do we have to chose or look at 8/20 waveform and when 10/1000 waveform, how do i know if i need 8/20 protection device or 10/1000 protection device?

2) Why do i choose TVS0500 over traditional TVS diode, what are the benefits?

3) is the steeper i/V of TVS0500 regarding to traditional TVS better and why?

4) What does mean this in ds?

Hello,
1) The IEC61000-4-5 standard specifies 8/20us surge. This is the industry standard. However, diode manufacturers are the ones that have the 10/1000us pulse. This is not standardized by anything but IEC61643-321 which just covers the specs of avalanche diodes. For system level testing you will be testing IEC61000-4-5.
2)The benefits is that the package size is smaller, the leakage is lower and the clamping during a surge event is much tighter. Please see our whitepaper about the benefits of TI's Flat Clamp TVS family. www.ti.com/.../slyy127.pdf
