MAX3232: Can the chip support hot plug

Part Number: MAX3232

Dear team

Our customer use MAX3232 for voltage level conversion. The MAX3232 chip is on the flexible plug-in BOARD 2. BOARD 2 is used in conjunction with BOARD 1 for serial port information output.

(1) please help to confirm whether MAX3232 supports hot plugging or not.

(2) if hot plugging is supported, what is the recommended resistance value of the matching resistance for the bus?

Best Regards

  • Lijia,

Although it's not officially claimed RS-232 ports are hot pluggable, hot swapping generally would not damage the transceivers. Per RS-232 standard, the receiver has a 5kOhm load to ground, which is integrated in IC. Also the transmission is low data rate, the system doesn't require impedance matching. Please let me know if you have more questions.

    Regards,
    Hao
