TRS3232: After 4KV ESD test, will see error data

Part Number: TRS3232
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , STRIKE

Dear E2E,

Customer use TRS3232 device on their system. They did 4kv ESD test. After that, they could see the error code through RS232 port.

Does team see the similar issue before and how to improve/fix it?

BR,

Jason

  • Jason,

Do you mean IEC ESD 61000-4-2 contact 4kV? What do you mean 'RS-232 port'? Are they the ports in the red circle? Anyway TRS3232E could be the improvement/fix, which passes 8kV IEC ESD 61000-4-2 contact. Please let me know if you have more questions.

    Regards,

    Hao

  • Hao,
Yes, customer conduct IEC ESD 61000-4-2 contact 4kV.
The signal path is from CPLD to TRS3232 to RJ45 port. therefore, connect a console cable to PC.
At begining, customer connect console cable on RJ45 port, but there are no connection in PC side.
therefore, conduct IEC ESD 61000-4-2 contact 4kV.
After that, connect console cable to PC. They foudn that PC receive the error code.

without console cable conect to their equipment, it is no error code issue.

as you mentioned that our device could pass 8kv test, coudl we aslo make sure there are no error code generated within 8kv ESD?

    BR,
    Jason
  • Jason,

Thanks for your explanation. I understand the application. I think TRS3232E should work better in this case, not TRS3232. Please let me know if you have more questions.

    Regards,

    Hao

  • Hao,

    Customer use TRS3232EIPWR already.

any info we need to provide could help to find the root cause?

    BR,

    Jason

  • Jason,

In this case, we need to check the system to see if 1) any non-ideals in the system (like poor grounding) limit the performance of TRS3232E; 2) other factors in the system makes the ESD strike higher than expected. For example, when the test was performed, were the grounding of the ESD machine and IC at the same level?
