TPS65987D: USB PD daisy chain implementation???

Hi team,

One of my customers is studying about the possibility of powering up their device using USB type C and PD. The total power is about 80W. No data path required. They also would like to know if they can do daisy chain with USB C and PD. Could you please help to confirm if the TPS65987D can do the job? Or else, please recommend the solution. Thank you very much

Hi Thai,

The TPS65987D could not support power passthrough. There would need to be another DC/DC supply on "80W Device 1" in order t re-regulate the voltage from the PSU port to the second USB PD port.

Hi Eric,

Please help to review and advise if below configuration is workable. The idea is to use two units of the TPS65987D. The first one is configured to sink max 200W power from the PSU for both Device 1 and Device 2. The second TPS65987D is configured to source max 100W to provide power to Device 2. Or please advise if one TPS65988 can do the job instead of two TPS65987D. Thank you very much

Hi Hung,

I'm not sure how you will get a 200W PSU. The USB PD spec only allows for 100W of power on a Type-C PD port. Additionally, you would need a DC/DC converter between PP_HV2 of TPS65987D_1 and PP_HV1 of TPS65987D_2 on "Device 1". If you are sinking 20V on the TPS65987D_1 you will need to reregulate that voltage to initially be 5V before you can start sourcing on TPS65987D_2.

Regarding the 200W PSU, do you think that it can be realized by following TIDA-050012 Power DUO Source 200W USB-C PD Reference Design and TIDA-050014 Power DUO Sink 200W USB-C PD Reference Design? It is stated in the documents that when these two boards are paired, Power Duo Mode can be enabled. This would allow for the TPS65987D to negotiate up to 200 W over a single Type-C cable.

It is clear to me regarding the need of adding a DC/DC converter between PP_HV2 of TPS65987D_1 and PP_HV1 of TPS65987D_2

Hi Hung,

You would need to find 200W USB Type-C Cables and 200W USB Type-C Connectors. There are none currently available in the market. TIDA-050012 and TIDA-050014 highlight that it can be achieved with the TPS65987D but the rest of the system would be limiting the performance in an end equipment due to these constraints.

Hi Hung,

The customer can implement a captive cable with their 87D Power DUO source that is specified for 10A. Then you will need to find a 10A rated connector for on the device 1 board.
