SN75176B: Operating Junction temperature spec

Part Number: SN75176B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1500, THVD1550, , SN65176B

Dear all,

Operating junction temperature Tj is 150℃ in the Absolute Maximum Ratings table of datasheet.

I am confused that it can operate until the Tj 150℃, because it is mention in the Absolute Maximum Ratings.

  • Hello,

The recommended ambient temperature range extends up to 70 C for this device.  Since the internal power dissipation is relatively small, typically the junction temperature will be close to 70 C at this condition as well.  Since this is the "recommended" operating limit, this represents the maximum temperature over which the performance of the device was characterized for the electrical/switching characteristics defined in the datasheet.  Operation at higher temperatures is possible, but parametric performance may shift outside of the datasheet minimum/maximum limits and lifetime reliability could be degraded by longer-term exposure to absolute maximum conditions.

    Regards,
    Max

  • I would add as well that if you are looking for a p2p transceiver IC with higher temperature support, you may want to consider THVD1500 or THVD1550 (depending on the application's data rate).

  • Hello Max,

    Thanks for reply,

Could you let me know the "recommended operating junction temperature" ? Datasheet dose not have this spec.
Because in my application, it measured 95 C case temperature and power is 0.375W.
So the expected junction temperature is approximately 99 C.
I wonder if I can operate it in this temperature.

  • Hello,

Unfortunately this device is only specified in terms of ambient temperature rating since this is the condition that is measured/regulated when characterizing/testing the datasheet's electrical and timing parameters.  Most of the time the internal power dissipation is fairly low, so to be conservative you could consider 70 C the recommended maximum junction temperature as well for SN75176B.  Similarly, it would be 105 C for SN65176B.  You may want to consider that part number if higher temperature support is needed.

    Regards,
