PCA9554A: Driving LED from output to GND

Part Number: PCA9554A

Hello,

Is it alright to drive the LED from the output to GND; i.e.; the recommendation in section 9.1.1.1 will not be followed? It says that it will minimize current consumption, but will there be grave effects?

Thank you

  • Hey Elisha,

The section you are referring to is to allow for lower consumption current, this is important for battery operated applications.

You can use the device to output high while the LED is tied to GND. But our device's high side driver is weaker/smaller compared to its low side driver. You can see in the recommended operating conditions (6.3 page 4) that the IoL is 25mA for one p-port while the IoH is -10mA for one p-port. If you decide you want to drive high inorder to turn on the LED, you need to make sure the current draw does not exceed -10mA to protect the device from damage.

    Thanks,
