TPD2E2U06-Q1: RS232 does not work with TPD2E2U06-Q1

Part Number: TPD2E2U06-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD2E007, , TPD1E10B09

Hi,
we were using TPD2E007 ESD diodes to protect our RS232 lines.
We changed to TPD2E2U06-Q1 to provide +/-20kV air discharge protection. To our surprise, after mounting this part, this interface does not work. Puzzled.

Please advise.

  • Hi Kumaran,

    Welcome to E2E!

The major difference between both of these devices is their working voltage. The TPD2E007 can operate in voltages up to 13V. The TPD2E2U06-Q1 can only operate up to 5.5V.

What voltages are you running with the RS232 lines?

    Best regards,

    Andy Robles

  • Hi Andy,

    Thank you for the response.

Yes, the operation voltage varies - that is the problem. I realized that RS232 operates close to +/-15V.

I am looking for a ESD diode that can withstand air-discharge of +/-20kV to protect my RS-232 signals.

    Kumaran

  • Hi Kumaran,

Unfortunately TI does not have a bi-directional ESD diode like the TPD2E007 with a working voltage close to the +/- 15V range that can also withstand an air-discharge of  +/- 20kV.

The best suggestion I could offer would be the TPD1E10B09, a single channel device with a working voltage of 9V. Although it has a higher working voltage it still does not get close to the +/- 15V working voltage range of the RS232 lines and could impose a problem to your application.

    Best regards,

    Andy Robles
